Allegories and Masquerades, Found book Pages, Cheese Cloth, Avacado dyed fabric, Wooden Dowel, 9"x 13", 2020

In this work I was inspired by the holes found in the process of decay such as the way paper can be eaten away by moths or the way nature begins to take back. For this work I wanted to convey they fragility of the materials while maintaining a feeling of importance by highlighting the pages title. I used the Avocado dyed fabric as it had the softest color that I felt fit the fragile look I was going for. To create the holes, I used an Xacto blade to carefully make the holes in the paper and fabric and then layered the pieces.

Rorschach, Tea dyed fabric, Canvas, Brown thread, 12"x 12", 2020

This work plays off the natural dye of the fabric to use its natural symmetry in a way that evokes different images when looked upon. When the fabric was dyed it came up with a relatively symmetrical image that repeated through the sheet, this symmetry reminded me of the Rorschach ink blot test. In the test you can see different things from the pattern, and from this I decided to take the pattern from the fabric and emphasize it by carving out a hole and dividing the pattern in two to enhance the symmetry. I then stitched it to a canvas sheet with a similar color pallet so not to detract from the fabric while emphasizing the space made.

Microbe, Wood, Tumeric Dyed Fabric, 14"x 12", 2020

: I wanted to attempt something more sculptural for the final two works in this project series and decided to do so through experimenting with wood cut outs and the ability of the fabric to coexist with it. In this work ( Microbe) I used a scroll saw to cut out the organic forms within the wood in a way to mimic the forms you might see under a microscope. I then used the Turmeric dyed fabric to back the piece and show through the microbial forms and make use of the contrast to highlight the mucus like coloration. In the Shadowbox work I took a similar approach and created spaces to be filled in by fabric to add depth and dimension. This work was inspired by stage sets and how theatrical the telling of a story can be even when there are no characters to be seen one can still create sucha story for themselves.
