Small Sculptures
Balsa and Paper Sculptures for 3D design, 2018
The main focus for these two works was to create complex structures on a smaller scale that emphasized the elements of design, each had to be created using two materials but strongly focus on one. For the balsa structure titled, Winding Roads I wanted to create a soft flowing texture with the wood, mimicking the movement of rushing wind or water, every moving, ever changing. On the edges of the sculpture are small diamonds made of tape that seem to disperse onto the curves in the wood. The dispersing of tape is to add an element of patterning and repetition to the piece while the curved balsa sections are meant to add elements of negative space. The second sculpture is titled, Protective barrier, this work focuses mainly on the use of paper as a material and conveys texture through out the cone elements that make up the sculpture. For this work I was inspired by natural coral structures found on reefs, these structures are home to small creatures and the form itself protects them inside.
