Texture and Relief

In Texture and Relief, I was inspired by the microscopic layers within our bodies, specifically the organic structures found inside of organs and the forms found at the cellular level.  I have always had a fascination with the complex structures within the body specifically the folds and layers of the tissues that make up our forms. These forms are complex and strong enough to survive us yet are soft and fragile. This softness is translated in my work through the tactile elements of the fabric. To achieve the texture and mimic tissue I used an 8-inch embroidery hoop to layer cotton stuffing inside of two layers of fabric and seal it inside by stitching around the form. I then used quilting thread and embroidery floss to create the designs and pull away the stuffing inside to create dimensional ridges that can be seen or experienced through touch.
